This same behavior happens in my Hardy 8.04 LTS system. This is a new install. The screen will blank -- oddly often during while running the audio application sweep, although whether there is a connection, or whether I am just using this program often I cannot tell. Often, but not always, I can type (blindly) ctrl-alt-del and choose "l" which logs me out of icewm (Ice Window Manger) and takes me back to the Ubuntu splash/login screen. I can then log back in.
