Same problem here on Averatec 3700 series.

I guess the problem is that X uses the BIOS for modesetting and the
Averatec BIOS reports 1680x1050 (max resolution of graphics chip) as the
highest possible resolution and not 1024x768 (max resolution of panel).

Usplash suffers from the same problem and uses 1680x1050 instead of
1024x768.
