Public bug reported:

There has been alot of discussion on the Brother printer and scan
drivers. While the brother printer packages work like a charm, setting
up the scanner is still a challenge (for my parents for example).
Woudn't it be great to simply run an adept batch as soon as a brother
component is detected, to grad the appropriate brother-printer package
and install it, and likewise do for the scanner and brscan-skey tool ?
Set up the usb access nodes in the fstab and the rules for udev and
simply make it work?

Because if you set up a new system and you have your Brother connected
already, it will be configured automatically, though with a non-working
driver. Even if you install the brother printer packages afterwards, you
wonder why your printer isn't working. You have to delete it and wait
for it to be set up again properly with the new drivers. While this may
be obvious for some geeks, it can be quite confusing for the new
folks...

just make it plug and play :)
