This does indeed appear to be a dying hard drive. Please try checking
the health of a drive using a utility or replacing it, then installing
again with the Ubuntu 8.04 release.
I'm marking this as Invalid, however if you are still experiencing this
problem with the new release and a known-good drive, please feel free to
reopen the bug.
