I think I'm pretty good at playing around dependency problems now ;) Well, I don't know what exactly was wrong but I managed to get Synaptic and UpdateManager into sync by a) removing all apt related packages including apt itself and b) installing apt/apt-utils from hardy and then re-installing synaptic etc
