You did not allocate sufficient space to install Ubuntu and the
installer crashed because of this. However, this is fixed in Ubuntu
8.04. The installer will first warn you that you do not have sufficient
space and then, should you ignore the warning and proceed, give you a
proper GUI dialog and message indicating that it cannot proceed any
further when it crashes.
If this occurred in 8.04, please feel free to reopen the bug.
