Do you have the french dictionary installed? Verify that myspell-fr-gut
is installed and that under Tools->Options->Language
Settings->Languages->Western is set to French and that there is a "ABC"
with checkmark icon next to it. The icon indicates that a valid
dictionary is installed. If it still doesn't show up then go to
File->Wizards->Install new dictionaries and install a French dictionary
which should resolve the problem.
