Same soundcard (Audiophile 2496), same problems. But: I actually do NOT use the
pulse-audio server, as I didn't get it working. Instead I prefer using JACK(D),
as I'm running NoteWorthy Composer with WINE and need to redirect the MIDI
output to Linux-/QSampler, as well as I need the 'realtime' component.
(My System: UbuntuStudio64 8.04, realtime kernel)
However, that is the way it had been working before - with Gutsy (
UbuntuStudio32, realtime kernel).
So, I AM able to listen to music via rhythmbox &c., but only if the
pulse-audio-server is turned off, and ICE1712 Multi or ALSA is selected in the
gnome-audio preferences. The (Automatic) option does not work.
Well, here are the error messages I get when trying to play sounds via
the gnome sound preferences while running JACKD:

(apparently, the automatic option tries to use the pulse audio server, which
isn't available, which is why the error message is the same)
Actually the results are the same, if the PulseAudio-Server is enabled
(which you can't configure properly [with an audiophile 2496 {the volume
dialog either disappears as fast as it appeared or you can't choose
anything - everything n/a -]).
