Thanks for reporting this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better.
The package seems to be damaged. please delete the package
/var/cache/apt/archives/perl_5.8.8-12_i386.deb
and try to install it again (after doing a "sudo apt-get update")
if this doesn't work please provide the output of
apt-cache policy perl
and of
md5sum /var/cache/apt/archives/perl_5.8.8-12_i386.deb
