Thanks for reporting this problem and helping to make ubuntu better.
Could you please provide more information about your system such that we
are able to understand what happens.
At least we need your "/var/messages" file when you boot from you
liveCD. It would also help if you could run
sudo lshw -C disk
and paste or upload the result here.
Please also give information about your motherboard/bios etc.
