I have a strange problem with my sound card since the last 2 kernel upgrades. I
did an upgrade from gutsy to hardy about two weeks after the hardy release and
the sound worked until the last two kernel upgrades.
It seems like the problem started after upgrading from linux-image-generic
2.6.24.17.19 to linux-image-generic_2.6.24.18.20.

At first I had no sound and tried all the tips&tricks I found on the
internet without success. After another reboot today I had sound, but
with a strange noise in the background. After a couple of minutes a very
loud sound came out of the speakers, which didn't stop. This very loud
sound starts now immediately on boot when snd-hda-intel gets loaded. The
only solution to that problem was to mount the partition and remove snd-
hda-intel.ko so it doesn't get loaded.

My soundcard is recognized correctly and shows up in "aplay -l". I can
open the alsamixer application and adjust the volume without any
problems. Rebuilding the alsa driver and adding the correct model
parameters to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base didn't solve the problem. There
aren't any errors in the log files about the sound drivers.

Hardware Details:

Thinkpad x61s
Intel HDA, Codec: AD1984
lspci: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Control
Bios Version: 2.07
