Additional Information: On Ubuntu 8.04, this issue seems to occur when the netatalk daemon looks for Appletalk devices, can't find any, and shuts down. It doesn't reawaken and rescan the network; the daemon must be restarted to recan the network.
The behavior I described in the previous two posts is identical to stopping the daemon (sudo /etc/init.d/netatalk stop), and can be fixed by restarting it (sudo /etc/init.d/netatalk restart).
