One more try to find a solution or workaround for this: I changed the value of the menu.lst parameter "default" from a number to "saved". I hope that this option will select the Windows XP title as the default boot option as the Windows XP title has "savedefault" in it's list.
The first boot shows success: default boot is Windows. Great. I'll now have to wait until a new kernel arrives to see if it holds.
