Public bug reported:
os: Hardy 8.04 fresh install
i was browsing to a page that had a java applet.
firefox prompted to use the plugin-finder to install a java plugin.
i checked about:plugins and there was no java plugin support.
i clicked to start the plugin-finder and it presented a list of 4 or 5 options.
i chose the first one, GCJ web plugin.
it completed the installation, but did not prompt to restart firefox.
i checked about:plugins and there was no java plugin support.
i closed firefox and restarted it.
i checked about:plugins and there was no java plugin support.
complicating factors:
i had at one time installed iceape browser but was not using it.
i used synaptic to remove it and then re-installed gcjwebplugin
but that did make the firefox plugin appear in about:plugins.
my fix was to add a symlink:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/classpath/libgcjwebplugin.so
/usr/lib/firefox-addons-plugins/libgcjwebplugin.so
