I think this might be the problem. It seems to be that nm-applet is having problems obtaining the network key from the gnome keyring. When I first attempted to use wireless the tray icon would animate and flash green and ask for the wireless key every minute or so. Then I opened the manual setup for wireless networks and was prompted by the keyring to allow network manager to access wireless keys. Since then the nm-applet has hung on 'waiting for network key'. I know nothing about gnome keyring at the moment but will look into it and see what i can figure out.
