keeping the old kernel booted results in another problem: as soon as one
installs the new modules and gladly boots into the new system, the
module is still not loaded; one has to manually do the `depmod -a` again
and `/etc/init.d/vboxdrv restart`, although everything should be
properly installed. (uninstalling/reinstalling helps, too.)

having to uninstall/reinstall something to make it work casts a very bad
light on our favorite packaging system, which should be avoided. (i
usually explain to new ubuntu users coming from nonfree os that there is
no uninstalling/reinstalling unless they modified the packages files --
i don't want them to fall back to their old habits)
