The problem here is the Installer is simply choosing the *wrong* X driver! It is selecting 'ati' when it should be selecting 'radeon'
Simply changing the driver in xorg.conf and executing 'startx' on the Live CD (I am using the Release Candidate of edgy!) causes perfect operation. Heck, even the Xorg.log.0 output spews out a ton of compatible cards for 'radeon' in which my card is listed (RV370 5B60), Why is the auto-detect choosing "ati" ? This is a critical issue!
