It is probably worth a try to use the -rt (realtime) kernel series instead of the -generic series (sudo apt-get install linux-rt, latest is currently 2.6.24-19-rt).
I am experiencing similar problems with the generic kernel series on an Acer laptop (see bug #234084) when accessing USB devices (via a PC-Card [PCMCIA] adapter in this case). They go away when I use an rt kernel.
