It looks like the gnomeapplet python bindings on ubuntu are broken.
I found a bug in an applet that's part of a project I'm working on. The
add_preferences() to load settings from schema didn't appear to work and
when I inspected ~/.gconf/apps/panel/applet/applet_X/ there was no
values stored in the XML file. Looking at other applets there was no
configuration stored for them either.
