I had a similar problem with my pbuilder environment. The problem was
that universe and multiverse repos was not enabled. I fixed that with
the following command:
$ sudo pbuilder update --other-mirror "deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy main restricted universe
multiverse" --override-config
Hope that solves your problem.
