Today Ubuntu shows "You can install 53 updates", but is failing when
booting from ALL available versions of Ubuntu; no longert recovers with
the passing of time.

Failure occurs after clicking "Install Updates", and consists of no
further activity, and inability to respond to "Close".

Note that "Minimize", Maximize", Resize of frame, and movement of frame
around screen all still work. It's acting as though it waiting for a
response from me (perhaps waiting for Password?), but no Query
displayed; alternatively, it's waiting for some external activity to
complete. Note that I'm *NOT* getting a Password request, neither after
clicking :check" nor after clicking "Install Updates".

Noticed that when clicking on "Install Updates", another window appears
in the bar at the bottom of the screen saying something like "Starting
Administrative Application", this disappears after about 5 seconds, and
then nothing else appears.

Still unable to get rid of this "stuck" copy of Update Manager except by
rebooting.

PS: Michael - I don't know if I have "notification area" applet; I've
only installed the basic system, except for a few games. Since Symantic
Package Manager is also failing in a similar fashion, I'm not sure how
to go about downloading/installing the applet.
