As per umggmu's test:
mplayer -benchmark -nosound -frames 1234 -vo xv VIDEOFILE : 5.325s
mplayer -benchmark -nosound -frames 1234 -vo gl2 VIDEOFILE : 18.406s
under compiz xv disregards vsymc apparently.
