In the advanced options you can choose where to install grub. As for Ubuntu not finding your Debian installation it is probably exactly like you said- separate /boot.
I understand its annoying, but I have multibooted many combinations of Debian and Ubuntu without ever once having an issue with the OS not being picked up or grub being put in a place I didn't want it to be installed. there is a very nice tutorial on the Ubuntu forums about multibooting using chainload or configuration files. take a look at it, it may make your life easier the next time you want to multiboot. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=724817 I am marking this as invalid because you can't call it a bug if you missed the installation options. ** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- Thank you for overwriting my bootloader https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/239912 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
