thanks, you guys. i don't know what the trouble was, but in the process of checking for all the above information and restarting, my sound's started working again. there were a couple of things that i installed along the way, like for the lspnp reading. maybe that's what fixed it. i'm a noob and not a programmer either, so i have no idea what happened. thanks anyway :)
