** Description changed: Using ubuntu 8.04, Open the logout/shutdown/switch user/etc. dialog by any method, such as from the main menu, by clicking on logout icon in panel, or by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del. Close the dialog by pressing the ESC key. If you now press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, the system will reboot rather than just killing the X server. If the logout dialog is closed by clicking on "cancel" or pressing ENTER - on the dafualt highlighted cancel button, or another action such as Lock + on the dafault highlighted cancel button, or another action such as Lock Screen is selected, then a subsequent Ctrl-Alt-BS restarts X as expected. This was observed on 2 different systems, one with Intel integrated graphics, the other ATI integrated graphics. Same behavior was observed using both metacity and compiz window managers, and any choice of visual effects from the System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects menu. Review of log messages after a restart shows segfaults in various programs and gdm complaining that "something went very wrong" and it is bringing down the system. If I open a terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1, and manually kill gdm, then start X again with the startx command, everything works as expected; Regardless of what method is used to close the logout dialog, a subsequent Ctrl-Alt-BS keypress kills X but does not cause a reboot. This problem had been present since release of ubuntu 8.04 and continues with latest updates installed as of 6/13/2008.
