I'm using ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. The sound card works fine, except for
one issue: the microphone almost never works. After fiddling with volume
settings for hours I've managed to make it work twice, but it always
stopped working after a reboot, and nothing makes it come back to
normality.
In Volume Control I see three choices in the Recording tab: Capture,
Capture 1, and Digital.
Messing with the volumes for Capture and digital does not seem to do
anything. Unmuting any of those or enabling recording from them is
uneffective, also. Unmuting Capture 1 has no effect, but enabling it for
recording triggers audio feedback. It still does not record.
In the two times I've managed to make the microphone work, Capture 1 was muted,
I think, and the microphone worked as recording from Digital.

Playback works fine, I can switch from front playback to heaphones/speakers at
will.
At the few moments the microphone worked Skype worked and recording from
gnome-sound-recording worked. In no moment I got any feedback from "test" in
"Default Input" in gstreamer-properties.
I do not use esound, do not have an /etc/asound.conf or an ~/.asoundrc .
This is a laptop.
