Dear r, in a terminal try running 'sudo aptitude update' (this will update the local database of available packages). then in the same terminal run 'sudo aptitude full-upgrade'. report here any error messages you see when running the above two steps. afterwards, try running your package manager again and tell us if the problem remains or if it is solved...
