Public bug reported:

A couple odf days ago, I was helping a friend with a "new to him" pc and
tried installing 8.04 (I downloaded it last Thursday) on his Presario
5000US with a Synapse brand LCD monitor. The install went fine, but
when the splash screens went away, and we should have booted into the
new system, I got an error message on the monitor, and no more.

I went on to install XP Pro, SP1 and it installed fine. The only thing
that seems odd, is that it only had 1024 X 728 and 640 x 480 resolution
available.

I don't recall the other numbers, but I could get them if absolutely
necessary.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
