30 minutes later: Back to normal after downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu12 followed by an upgrade to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13.4 and changing the display setting in System->Preferences. Allmost 24 hours later and an incredible number of attempts to correct the bug ;-)
