Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

About 50% of the time nm-applet will not connect to my wireless network when I
boot. Sometimes re-selecting the wireless network in nm-applet will work.
Sometimes I have to do this several times. Other times a reboot will fix it.
Often I have to reboot several times and even resort to restarting the wireless
router.
I have experienced this problem with Feisty, Gutsy and now Hardy. The most
reliable fix I have found is to install WiCD instead. WiCD works perfectly.
I've never had it fail and have never had to restart the router. It does what I
expect it to do, that is, it connects first time every time.
I've attached part of the syslog that appears relevant.
I should add that the wireless access point is configured for WPA.
Relevant packages.
