Public bug reported:

Hiho!

Well, since Version 7.04, the ffmpeg version shipped with Ubuntu is not able to
convert JVCs mod files to any other format.
ffmpeg reports an error with the decoding of the audio stream.
mod files are mpeg2 video streams coupled with ac3 audio.

Work arround:
Take the ffmpeg packaged with Ubuntu 6.10 to get those files converted.

Hint:
Maybe this issue is routed in the libavcodec version, which is currently the
libavcodec1d.... Those of 6.10 was libavcodec0d.
So, maybe this is an issue of libavcodec1d ?

Importance:
Well, as this format is the current favorite of JVC, this may become more
important in the future.

Question:
Is the ac3 support maybe removed due to legal reasons?
I tried out medibuntu repository, which doesn't help!

About me:
Well, I am new to Ubuntu (and UNIX as well) since the end of 2006. I have been
a professional developers up to 2 years ago, for about 15 years. Mainly on the
bug-#1-"operating-system".
;-))
I also walked the bloody way of device driver development (on the
bug-#1-"operating-system").
On the application development side of life, I do prefer Java development.
On Linux am a pretty new. Yes, and due to may private situation, I do have only
time for computing on Mondays and Tuesdays - evening time (UTC+2).
I wrote this profile, not for spamming, but to inform you about my ability to
support you - in time and quality.

Of course, I can send you a sample mod file in any size you like.

So, if you like, we could work-out this bug.
I have currently installed 8.04 on a 10 GB test partition, which is not my
working version of Ubuntu. So I can use it for testing in any way. I won't be
angry, if it will not work anymore.

Bye,
Sven (SKid)
