Well, allmost ok, gdm was still in an ugly 1280x768 resolution that stretches everithing verticaly.
I added this command at the end of /etc/gdm/Init/Default xrandr -s 1280x1024 This way, everything is back to normal. To conclude this adventure ;-) I would have like to understand what messes my X display and why is it so hard to find the solution. I imagine the problem with a newbee... I'm using Linux everyday since more than 10 years and this is the first time I see such a problem!
