I'm kind of hoping that just by adding my name to the end of this ever growing list someone at Canonical may realize that this is a bug that should be taken seriously. I've just encountered it on a PC that I had convinced a paying customer to make the swap to Ubuntu on. I believe I may have actually run into this bug once before while mucking around with some old PC parts, but fortunately that time I wasn't doing anything important and so was able to ditch the whole project without bothering to investigate.
