I am having a similar problem, I get the "starting administrative application" then it goes away. Synaptic wont start up graphically but will as a sudo from the terminal update manager will run but freezes when it checks for updates hardware testing does not start network starts and runs appropriately sys mon works sys log works Time and Date works users and groups works.
in addition, the computer (dell 700m) will freeze after blanking the screen on shut down while running the drive. 5.10 and 7.4 worked great on this machine. I have updated to the latest Kernal, with no improvement.
