Thanks for your report.
I'm confirming this for Dapper but I doubt this will ever be fixed
because the package is not maintain anymore.
A workaround is to use scsi emulation to access your cd writer. To do
this add "hdc=ide-scsi" (or the device corresponding to your cdrom) to
the boot option for your kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst and add the line
"ide-scsi" to the file /etc/modules
Your cdrom should appear as /dev/scd0 and will be identified as a valid
scsi device.
