Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I am very new to Linux (4 months) so am not sure if I am following
proper protocol or using proper terminology.

I was running Gutsy but with KDE desktop but using many Gnome programs.
When I updated to Hardy, I think my ADSL connection crashed leading to a
number of problems.

While many programs ran, Update Manager would not load the administrator
(password) widow and would just hang until I" forced Quit" Eventually I
started a "safe" Gnome session and was able to get directions to run a
program in terminal "dpg--configure -a" which returned an error
"E:_cache->open() failed, please report"
as well as something (sorry did not write it all down) about a "broken filter."
I also got an error message about "Broken Packages"

During this process I also tried to run Adept Manager which also crashed
resulted in the attached "kcrash" file with a request that I report it
as a bug. After this attempt Adept loaded and ran properly. It
downloaded most updates and stopped with the error about "Broken
Packages" I have no idea how to try and find these but everything I
have tried to do since has run fine and no more errors.

** Affects: update-manager (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
