Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

While upgrading to Version 7.10 I got the following message:

"Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

Update manager version:

"update-manager:
  Installed: 1:0.81.3

See attachment for the zipped log files (the ones stated in the error
message).

Notes:
* Openoffice was installed by hand
* nvidia driver was installed by hand using "envy"
* The "X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 170" errors
result from the wacom-entries in xorg.conf created by "envy"
* The problems seem to be starting here (snip from main.log):

"2008-06-25 04:41:21,881 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libpam0g':
'subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)

After that, lots of similar messages for "login" (!), "passwd" (!) and "sudo"
(!!)
This does not look good...
