** Description changed:
Binary package hint: update-manager
While upgrading to Version 7.10 I got the following message:
"Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport.

See attachment for the zipped log files (the ones stated in the error
message).
Notes:
* Openoffice was installed by hand
* nvidia driver was installed by hand using "envy"
* The "X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 170" errors
result from the wacom-entries in xorg.conf created by "envy"
* The problems seem to be starting here (snip from main.log):
"2008-06-25 04:41:21,881 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: 'libpam0g':
'subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault)

"
After that, lots of similar messages for "login" (!), "passwd" (!) and "sudo"
(!!)
This does not look good...
+
+ === EDIT ===
+ While I filed the above report, the "...recovery ... (dpkg --configure -a)"
was still in progress.
+ I left the machine unattended for a while. When checking back again, the
update -manager window was gone.
+
+ Trying to restart update-manager now yields a segmentation fault (!!)
+
+ apt-get reports the update-manager to be the latest version, however.
+
+ # aptitude dist-upgrade
+ reports broken dependencies for open office (which is quite understandable
regarding the fact that OOo is version 2.4.1-17, as opposed to
2.3.0-1ubuntu5.4) and wants to install libneon, libsvg1 and libwpg.
+ Moreover, nvidia-glx-new wants to be upgraded - after the update-manager had
downgraded it from the version I had installed some time ago with "envy"...
+
+ And, last not least, knetworkmanager is "unused" and marked for removal,
+ which I do find kind of surprising - is there a replacement?
+
+ Here is the complete list:
+
+ "The following packages are BROKEN:

+ Resolving dependencies...
+ The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

+ "
+
+ I'm not sure if it is safe to reboot my system, regarding the
+ aforementioned messages in main.log.
