What I understood from the original report was that he/she was using a
fresh install of GNOME 2.22.2 on a 64 bit Ubuntu system. This could be
done via terminal through a server install of Ubuntu 7.10 as well, so I
was a little confused about what the original poster was using.
Anyway, the OP said that the problem was caused by a conflict with a
previous incomplete install and doing a fresh install after formatting
the hard drive fixed the issue.
