Hi Dave, I'm hoping they will have this issue fixed soon, I've resorted to my $20 5-in-one USB reader. Lets keep our fingers crossed. My laptop does exactly the same thing you described so your not alone :-). The kernel driver for this particular piece of hardware is still considered experimental and the previous version of Ubuntu was hit and miss with the card reader as well, however the system did not lock up it just un- mounted the card.
