I can confirm this in hardy, on a dual screen setup using nvidia drivers - it's extremely aggravating - i've been using ctrl+alt+backspace to stop the screen flicker.
In my case it's a lot more aggressive - so hopefully it's the same problem and will be impacted by the same fix. After locking the computer (or power saving blank) one of my screens (19" Samsung) flickers continuously and eventually turns off. Any chance Dan McGuirk that you could include the xrandr lines you use, so I have a better work around for the moment?
