Dragonplayer cannot play DVD ISOs right now. It is a known issue. As for the Avi files, I imagine you do not have the codecs installed. VLC uses a different set of codec libraries to xine (the engine dragonplayer is using) Try installing: libxine1-all-plugins either through synaptic/adept, or by typing "sudo apt-get install libxine1-all-plugins"
