Public bug reported:
So the touchpad on my relatively new Dell Inspiron 1420n doesn't work
anymore under Hardy Heron.
I don't know when the problem started. I first noticed it in mid June.
I can use a MS usb mouse without issue and am currently using a MS
Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 - both without issue. The touchpad works
when I boot to the live CD.
The buttons work but there's no scrolling or moving the pointer. I've
checked the physical hardware and that all appears fine. I've also been
searching the web for the last 3 nights for a solution. I've added boot
lines to grub, tried adding and moving various lines in xorg.conf,
reinstalled the synaptics driver, and also tried installing gsynaptics.
I have no idea where to ask or what to do next.
tpconfig says:
~$ sudo tpconfig
[sudo] password for undfined:
Found Synaptics Touchpad.
Firmware: 8.96 (multiple-byte mode).
dmesg | grep says:

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
