I agree the Debian specific patch should be more prominent, but it has
been a fairly clear upstream decision. Furthermore, NM is in universe,
so it's eternally a YMMV condition.
Personally, I read the README.Debian for every non-trivial package I
install after having been bitten by these kind of things for years.
