Hey - I'm having exactly the same issue. I tried turning off the visual effects and it seemed to have worked and then froze on me again. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and it looks like the Advanced desktop effects settings weren't installed. Looks like this is a problem for other Debian-based distros like Gentoo, too.
