I think the following lines from the Xorg log are the interesting ones:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "fglrx"
(WW) fglrx(0): Failed to open DRM connection

Can't spot anything in the dmesg output.

The compiz FAQ mentions that the white screen problem is a common result
of the graphics driver not loading. FYI, I'm using the stock fglrx
driver from the ubuntu repositories.
