The link from the previous comment is from a support thread about a
Thinkpad laptop. I have an Everex laptop, not a Thinkpad, but I did try
their suggestions. The relevant items:

a) use
    /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
This didn't work on my laptop.

b) Mute the pcm volume and after that the master volume, the sound will
shows up again (the order is not important)

This didn't work on my laptop.

c) Switch the sound system from Autotdetect to ALSA in the
Preferences>Sounds>Devices menu.

My laptop was already set up that way, so this didn't help.

d) Look at Bug #198218
One suggesion in there was ty try:
    sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload

This did get sound running again. But it looks like it unloads and
reloads all ALSA-related modules, which also would kill everything using
sound. Fairly extreme, but it does work.

But should that be necessary?
