thanks for the answer
I have been googling a lot to try and figure out the slow menus problem
and experimenting. It seems that it is a problem with all the
applications that use the gnome "open" and "save as" applications.
With gedit run from the terminal - it comes up without any mesages - still
takes 60 to 90 seconds to bring up "save as menu".
However this slow menu problem seems to be in all the gnome problem for my
desktop. i made a second user and it does not occur there -
But I have not run the second user enough to accumulate a large lost of
non-existant or moved files for that user.
I think it must have to do with gnome applications searching through some
sort of file tree to come up with the save as options. maybe it has a non
existant file or partition in the "recently used" set of files. but I
cannot figure out how to flush the "recently used" selections.
I have gotten rid of the "Bookmark" ed selections under Places from the
Panel and that did not make any difference.
