As HansHook also mentioned the solution for a MSI K9A Platinuum is to update BIOS to version 1.8. This solved the start up problem for ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron. If you use a RAID set - do not worry - it will stay intact after bios update (only testet with windows xp dual boot). By the way: disabling the sata controller in the BIOS will make it possible for ubuntu 8.04 to boot from ide harddisk even if you do not use BIOS version 1.8.
