Were you using the final version of Ubuntu 8.04 or one of the daily CD
images? The reason I ask is that I recall a very similar bug that we
fixed shortly before release. Also, can you please post /var/log/syslog
and /var/log/partman from an installation attempt following the
instructions in http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingUbiquity/AttachingLogs ?
